- The Legend of the Almond Tree: From the Greeks:
In ancient Greek mythology it is believed that there once lived a beautiful princess called Phyllis who fell in love with a handsome young man called Demophon. Demophon went off to a battle and did not return. Phyllis felt abandoned, yet she waits and waits patiently for his return. No-one can take the place of Demophon and she eventually dies of a broken heart. In sympathy to her sad plight, the gods decided to transform Phyllis into an Almond tree to become a symbol of hope. Demophon at last returns only to find his beloved has died.
The distressed Demophon eventually finds the leafless, flowerless tree: his beloved Phyllis. He now realises how important his love for Phyllis has become, nothing can satisfy him and he admits the truth: That his love for Phyllis would continue infinitely – even after her death.
Unable to contain himself, he rushes over with tears in his eyes and embraces the tree. Suddenly the tree explodes into blossom. The almond tree from that day, the emblem of Hope also symbolized the simple message that nothing can conquer true love – not even death itself. The beautiful Blossoms of the Almond Tree have become the symbol of this simple truth.
- From the Ancient Egyptians
The wonderful qualities of the Almond were not lost on the Ancient Egyptians. When the famous expedition into Egypt by Carter and his band was completed it was discovered that Almonds were one of the treasures of great value to the Egyptians left to be found in Tutankhamon’s tomb. It is believed that Cleopatra used fine oils for her legendary anti-aging beauty treatments. The oil in Second Chance is extracted from the finest almonds and bottled for you.
2. From the Bible
In Biblical times Almonds and their byproducts were revered. The word “Almond” appears 10 times in the Bible. In Genesis 43:11 Almonds are described as one of the finest products of the land.
- Dreams
A dream about Almonds always indicates travel. It is believed that if you dream of Almonds your are going to travel. If sweet almonds, you will travel towards a prosperous situation. If bitter almonds unfortunately your travel will lead to some misfortune.
- Tokens
Tradition teaches us that giving Almonds in uneven numbers ie three, five and seven is a token of good fortune. You will sometimes find an heap of almonds (uneven quantity) at Weddings, Christenings and Religious Ordinations for those who cherish this custom. Often the Almond nuts are painted silver to enhance the festivities.
Virgil, the Poet believed that if the Almond trees had a bountiful blossom in early spring it would forecast good crops generally.
